Conch Republic Days

A sunny 55 degree day and the Blackhawks won last night with a 2-0 shutout. Hopefully, the Bulls can bounce back with a win tonight.

Congrats to Joakim Noah on being named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Obviously, the vote was taken before the first playoff game. He's my favorite player and I'm sure he'll have a better game tonight!

Another iceberg the size of Atlanta broke loose and is heading into the shipping lanes. This one is almost 600 feet thick and will take at least a year to melt. Hmmm, I wonder how this keeps happening?

Dane Eagle believes that elected officials should be held to a higher standard. Mr. Eagle is an elected republican representative from Florida who was arrested for a DUI early monday morning. Allegedly, he ran a stop light and over a curb before being arrested by authorities and charged. He's claiming innocence but hired a high priced mouthpiece so he can't explain why his standard is suddenly lower compared to other elected officials. Is that hypocrisy I smell in the Florida sea air?

It's the 32nd annual Great Conch Republic Days Celebration in Key West this week. We've been down there the past 2 years for this historical and fun event. Key West briefly seceded from the Union on April 23, 1982 to protest the border patrol stops on US 1 which was killing tourism with the traffic backups. It was a tongue in cheek move to make a point and it worked as the media descended onto the island and the border patrol ceased operations shortly afterwards.

My favorite part of the celebration is watching the bed races on a closed off Duval Street. We were at Willie T's watching the Bulls game as the festivities started. All of the racers were wearing outrageous costumes racing some juiced up beds and the crowd had a great time. Mr. Duval would have been proud.
