Remembering Dennis James

Well, it's with deep regret that I announce the passing of my good buddy and one of my very first blog readers in Dennis James of Milwaukee. We worked together for 4 years in the banking industry and even got laid off at the same time. We've kept in touch ever since.

Dennis was a huge baseball fan. Him the Brewers and myself the Cubs which he always razzed me about. Throughout the World Series we texted as my Cubs finally won. When I asked him if he bought he World Series Cubs gear yet he told me he was wearing it.

At that very moment he was lying in a hospital bed with leukemia but still had the wisecracks. He didn't have a lot of hair at the age of 63 and I asked him if he still had the curly locks. He quickly took a photo and texted me his shaved head from the chemo.

He was diagnosed around September 1st and passed away last Thursday. It was a rare form and I'm told a survival rate of around 15%. For people over 50 years of age it's about 0. He turned 64 almost a month ago but he knew the writing on the wall and never let us know how bad it really was. I believe he faced death with bravery and dignity. A good Irishman until the very end!

Judging by the service today he was loved by many.

I'll be forever proud just to call him my friend. I don't deal with death very good and it's why I never use the word 'goodbye'. All my sign offs are 'later'. I never said goodbye to Dennis, but I hope he knows how much I thought of him.

God Bless Dennis.

Back From AZ Again

Another wonderful Arizona trip and a big thanks to our hosts John and Angela. It wasn't quite as warm as last year but still very good.

We took a brief interlude in the middle to travel to Tuscon. Krissy and I stayed at the famous Hotel Congress which is where they caught John Dillinger in 1934.

We also went to Old Tuscon the movie studio and took a tour of St. Xavier church which was built around 1692. Also took in a play called the Two Amigos at the Gaslight Theatre. Coco thought the show was hilarious.

Back in Scottsdale he managed to do some go karting with Justin and we hiked Pinnacle Peak. Cave Creek we visited twice as well as Old Scottsdale.

The big event was the Cubs Spring Training game against the Reds. John bought me a Lee Smith autographed baseball and he went for a George Foster ball. Both were terrific guys. Coco and I almost caught balls but came up short. No worries though as it was a terrific trip once again!

Getting back in the groove now!

I Gave Trump A Chance

I've intentionally kept my mouth shut on Trump. I don't like him at all but he deserved a chance. A chance he's blown just as quickly as I thought he would. Then this morning, All the President's Men is happening all over again. Four of Trump's campaign operatives have been linked with Russia over almost the entire campaign last year.

General Flynn resigned yesterday in disgrace and I hope the Army takes away his hefty pension for borderline treason. The FBI has him on tape talking to a Russia Ambassador and he lied about it to the FBI and the Vice-President Pence. Pence even went on national tv and stood up for Flynn. Considering Flynn worked in Intelligence most of his career he should be charged with stupidity for getting himself taped.

Naturally people like Jason Chaffetz and Rand Paul don't want an investigation to see why Russia was meddling in our election and perhaps working hand in hand with Trump to get him elected. Paul even said "Republicans shouldn't investigate Republicans." So much for all of us being Americans.

Milwaukee's own Al Jarreau passed away just after the Grammy's the other night. He won 7 of them in his lifetime and was a true legend who will be missed. He actually grew up on Reservoir a handful of blocks away from where I live.

Mary Tyler Moore and Miguel Ferrer also passed away this month. Moore was in my all time favorite show, The Dick Van Dyke show. Ferrer was a legendary character actor who was in NCIS Los Angeles at the time of his passing. He was also the cousin of George Clooney who released a classy and touching statement on his cousin.

Going back to Trump, it has the feel of Watergate all over again. My school principal ordered the Chicago Tribune for everyone in our school and we followed it closely from start to finish. Ironically, the question then over 40 years ago is exactly the same as it is now. What did the President know and when did he know it?

The Big Easy Recap

What a great trip. Ten people in New Orleans for Holly's birthday celebration is guaranteed to be a great time. Krissy and I arrived there first on Wednesday night. It should have been earlier but we had a plane delay in St. Louis.

We started off by checking into the Hotel Manzarin which is a fantastic place with great staff. We threw our bags in and headed for Jean Lafitte's Absinthe Bar from 1807. It's totally ancient with a high bar, low seats and great drinks. We toured Bourbon Street after that.

Other folks arrived on Thursday and we hung around them at several bars. Ed actually got to play a couple songs with the house band at Fat Catz.

More people arrived on Friday. On Saturday we did the St Louis cemetery tour with Gary and Michelle which was very interesting. Nicolas Cage fell in love with New Orleans and bought out a space and had a mausoleum built for himself. A very interesting choice in design and there's a photo below. Saturday night was a venture to Frenchmen's Street which has more of a local flavor. We didn't get back to the hotel till 3am.

One of my two favorite places was Jimani where I had a steak poboy. It was by far the best sandwich that I've ever had in my entire life! The other, a place I kept gravitating to with Krissy, was the Chart Room. No relation to the one in Key West but it sure looked similar. A true locals joint led by Al, the Bell Captain at the Hotel Monteleone for 56 years and John the Magician who has been in several movies.

A special thanks to Eddie Willis for a truly great two hour show at Prohibition 21. An 80 year old blues legend who truly tore the house down and it was my pleasure to watch it!

The French Quarter is a magnificent place and the people of New Orleans were nice and very patient with all the tourists. I've left out quite a bit more but it wouldn't be the Crescent City if we didn't leave a few secrets there. I look forward to a return visit someday as New Orleans gave me a great idea for a book!

Russian Sympathizer Or Just A Pervert

Just when you think things can't get crazier the latest Trump bombshell comes out. And it was leaked by the intelligence agencies apparently and to add a little intrigue England's MI6. That's right, the James Bond guys!

At this point they are nothing but allegations but there is an investigation and nobody on the Republican side is denying this. It involves his campaign aides meeting with the Russians for help in the election. But, the Russians take it one step further and maybe Trump is correct when he says Putin is smart.

That's because the investigation involves a sex tape from Trump's visit to the Ritz Carlton in Moscow in 2013 for a beauty pageant. Allegations say it involves a few hookers and a golden shower. My son just got back from Mexico and he's wondering what kind of shower is that. Nice! And this creep is going to be President next week. Apparently Russian spies bugged his room with cameras.

I listened to BBC and another foreign radio station tonight just to confirm my suspicions which were correct. As a country, at this moment, we are the biggest joke on the planet. A sad day indeed.

Term Limit Time

For politicians the New Year is the same as last year. They can't get out of their own way. If their asses weren't attached I'm not sure they could find them. The very first thing they try to do is drastically reduce an ethics board so they can get away with more murder. The very very first thing they do!

Thankfully the people went on an uproar and the apparently weakest Speaker of the House in modern history pulled the bill.

It's back to the grind but a good New Year so far. The weather is in single digits but we're getting used to it. No snow though.

Football season for my Bears is over and we are drafting third. They better not blow this pick and they have seven rounds of top five picks.

It's winter recycling time which means the recycle guys stop by whenever and pick it up rather than us taking it to the curb. That might sound like a good idea except my recycle guy is totally inept. He bear hugs the recycle bin and walks down in front of it instead of getting behind it and tipping it back on the wheels. It's much easier that way and it wouldn't tear up my wooden steps.

Going to work on my book now. I'm so close to having the final write finished. Definitely a longer process than I bargained for!

Polar Bear Plunge 2017

NYE was a blast and I think we're still recovering. 5 Card Stud put on a great show and the dinner and company were wonderful!

Jimmy Butler dropped in 52 points tonight. He's having a great season so far. It's hard to believe this kid from Marquette fell so far in the first round for the Bulls to grab him.

Mango is up to 53 pounds. That's a 12 pound gain so I think the vet is right that she was much younger than they said at the Humane Society.

It's 40 and rainy the last couple days here in Milwaukee. Better than snow!

5000 people showed up to watch the Polar Bear Plunge in Lake Michigan yesterday with 500 participants, a record. I keep contemplating to do the plunge and this would have been a good year for it!

So far I'm keeping to my workout schedule. Then again, it's only day 2!

NYE 2016

Krissy and I are getting ready to go to John and Angela's for a pre-party then off to the Knick with a group of people for dinner and 5 Card Stud our favorite band. Be careful out there tonight! Watch out for amateurs!!

My Dad and Dee made it to Tuscon safely. Even with enough time for their potluck dinner with friends. I'm sure it's warmer there.

Forgot to mention that I received a prized W Cubs flag. It's three by five. Now we're looking for flag poles. We're going to run the flag up when it's cocktail hour in the summer. I'm getting a Key West flag also for it.

Lately I've been listening to Old Time Radio Classics on Sirius channel 148. It's really good and I can see how people had to use their imaginations back then. No video games to do it for you!

I've made 15 New Year resolutions. I seldom make any but I'm determined to have a great 2017 despite the Putin loving incoming President!

I recently watched Fox News regarding gas prices going up 50 cents recently. A commentator told us that expect at least another 40 cent rise next year but it's good for consumers and oil companies but when prices reach that range. I was born on a day but not yesterday sir. Let's make it a 16th resolution. Not to watch your bullshit station ever again!

Princess Leia Will Be Missed

Carrie Fisher just passed away at the young age of 60. Star Wars certainly wouldn't have been the same without her. I loved her in the Blues Brothers and Shampoo but she should have been in a lot more movies. She was a legend who will be missed.

Yesterday it reached 50 degrees in Milwaukee but the weather is a more December normal of 25 today. It's hard to believe that the 14 inches of snow is nearly gone. All the rain and extreme winds lately has the grass showing again which I didn't think we would see until February.

Rex Ryan was fired by the Buffalo Bills today. Perhaps the most over rated coach of all time in the NFL. He talked big but never backed it up. This could be his last job in the league as he's burned a lot of bridges.

Many thanks to everyone for all the Christmas parties we attended. I'm working on my New Years resolutions as I write.

Coco was the only guy out of 15 who showed up for soccer last night. So he was ran through a professional workout by a professional player and did quite well.

Krissy and I are getting ready for a Tuesday afternoon of fun. Not sure where yet as Tuesday's aren't a busy afternoon but we will make it work. We always do!!!

Goodbye Bernard Fox

We have at least 12 inches of snow and it is making the driving tough. We have the 4 inch rule so we can only park on one side of the road. Digging out of a blizzard is never fun!

Yesterday we went to a wedding and reception in the Fontana area. It was a lot of fun but thankfully Jim drove his big heavy Jeep although I heard it broke down after they dropped us off. Hopefully that turned out ok.

The Bears lost to the Packers on a last second field goal. I'm still fuming about that game!

It turns out Putin is the richest man in the world. He's worth 85 billion bucks. No wonder he's buddies with Trump.

The greatest character actor passed away this week. Bernard Fox was a legend to me. From Dr. Bombay to Malcolm Merriweather he could be anybody in any series. He was in the leading scene of Big Jake and had a nice part in Titanic. He never aged it seemed and he will be missed!

Red Wine Season

I always know it's the winter season when Krissy and I start drinking red wine at night. I seldom touch the stuff in warmer months but we've popped a few corks this week. The wind chill is minus 0 right now so we might be doing some more cork popping!

The Federal Reserve raised interest rates a quarter point today. No big deal as it was expected. I actually thought there was a chance they would do a half a point. There will be 2-3 more next year unless Trump spends us into more of a gutter.

It's the Bears-Packer game this week. It's not really exciting anymore unless both teams are good at the same time.

Christmas shopping is still on the table. I still have plenty of time!

Tom Petty Is Coming

I was correct in my prediction back in July that Tom Petty would be coming to Summerfest 2017. He's playing two shows on July 5th and 6th as part of his 40th anniversary tour!

Happy Birthday to Kirk Douglas on his 100th birthday! He's had some career and he's given away millions over the years to wonderful causes.

John Glenn passed away a 95 this week. He was the first man to orbit the earth in basically a tin can. No one could ever question this man's courage ever!

A tough week for astronauts as Buzz Aldrin became sick at the South Pole and had to be evacuated out for hospital care due to altitude sickness I heard. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery.

A man in Wisconsin just announced that he ate his 29,000 Big Mac. First, why would you count something as idiotic as this? Secondly, why would anybody admit they eat that?

The snowy weekend finally looks like it's letting up. It looks like we received around 8-9 inches of snow and the roads are just a mess.

Congrats to Mick Jagger on the birth of his 8th child. Yep, at 73 he's still going strong in more ways than one!

Goodbye Jorge

The Cubs traded Jorge Soler to the Royals today for a premium closer in Wade Davis. It was a winning trade for both teams. We needed a closer and had an extra young outfielder to deal. He will be a very good power hitter.

We're in the 20's today and it looks like more cold coming our way for a good week or so. Mango doesn't seem to mind the cold at all. I thought we might have to buy her a little coat but so far so good and she loves the snow.

Krissy bought her an indestructible Kong today. It lasted just a few minutes with Mango. It has a 30 day guarantee with it. Guess what's going back for a full refund? This dog can chew.

My new desk looks perfect for my book endeavor. I'm heading to it now to do a little book writing.

Santa Claus Ride

Every you went Saturday you would see someone dressed as Santa riding through the streets of Milwaukee. It's an excellent pub crawl that amuses the heck out of me. They ride fast and there must be a couple thousand of them as they are everywhere.

OPEC is cutting down on production thus oil and gas prices will be going up. How much is still to be determined but it's just in time for the holiday season.

Alec Baldwin does a Trump impersonation on SNL and Trump the thin skinned man keeps bashing them on Twitter along with the Chinese. Baldwin says he will stop the impersonation which is hysterical if Trump simply shows his tax returns. Fat chance, we'll never see them!

Congrats to Terry Boers who is retiring after 25 years at the SCORE radio station. He's the last of the original crew which made sports radio an all day event.

A man in New York took a bucket of gold shavings off a back of a truck when the driver wasn't looking. Eighty six pounds of gold is a lot of greenbacks. I must be old school. I'm rooting for the crook because somebody who leaves millions on a back of a truck unattended deserves to be robbed jut for being an idiot!

It's Snowing

Today is the first real snow of the season and the Bears won! It's not more than an inch or so and it will be melted in a day or two but it's mucking up the roads and sidewalks.

Coco had his first futsal indoor game today and they lost pretty badly. He has a practice tonight also. He had three shots but none went in.

I picked up Coco's IPhone today to charge it for him. It has like 3 layers of gook on it, unbelievable!

My new desk arrived and we're putting it together. Not as smoothly as the directions say and I need a new dowel from the hardware store to put the last leg on.

I've been running everyday since the first. I'm a little sore but not too bad so far.

Krissy and I started watching the Netflix series Bloodline last night. So far it's been very good just as advertised and the Keys really shine in this series!

Off to the hardware store now, take care!

The Big Bad Wolf

I was listening to a hunting talk show for a while today. People were discussing why the deer hunting permits were down and less deer were being killed during this season. It's down about 10% and people seemed to be in an uproar although I imagine the deer our grateful. A lot of people are blaming the DNR because the wolf population is getting a bit high for comfort. It's too dangerous for the hunter's to be out there. Really? The wussification of America keeps going on and on and on. Dear hunters, you have guns and the animals don't. If a wolf gets too close to you simply shoot it like a mass shooter in a movie theater. Please stop the whining.

Barrow, Alaska will have no sun for about two months until January. It seems like they are really up there in Alaska. Like Russian Vodka up there!

The recount has started in certain states and Trump is all in an uproar about it. He says the recount is a scam. He also says that due to voter fraud he has million more votes that weren't counted. Umm, wouldn't you want a recount then if you actually believed that.

I've tried to avoid the news and Trump. Yet, he can't stop the twitter so I have to hear of his nonsense. Now he believes that flag burners should be locked up for a year and stripped of their citizenship. Did this guy even attend his 8th grade civics class? It's been decided by the Supreme Court that he can't do that due to a certain thing called the First Amendment. Only 4 more years of this asshole and that is my first amendment right you fricking lunatic!

The Real Flo

Florence Henderson from the Brady Bunch passed away at the age of 82. She played the mother of a blended family and the show was really ahead of it's time. I was surprised to hear that she was 82 as she really aged well.

I really don't get the Black Friday sensation. Sure, there's some awesome deals out there but isn't there always if you look around. The crowds and lines just aren't for me.

Coco had his soccer clinic tonight. He's progressing well playing against the older kids. Most of them are 14-16 and he's still 12.

There will be an official recount in Wisconsin for the Presidential Election. Jill Stein raised the funds and pulled the trigger.

I cooked a 12 pound turkey today and it came out great. Fresh turkey sandwiches on great bread for the next 5 days!

Have a great weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving 2016

It was this day in 1984 that Doug Flutie threw his Hail Mary pass for a Boston College win. I'll always remember that day. I was on an airplane that was landing at Logan Airport in Boston and they announced it to the plane and everybody went crazy as they were from Boston. My friends and I were running a cross country race the next day and it's where I set my 10k personal best of 30:36!

Coco is over for the next week and we'll be leaving with Krissy for Illinois in a little bit for a trillion course dinner. They really do it big!

I keep hearing all these mattress commercials on television and a particular store advertises that they have no salesman at all to bother you. They really make a big deal about it and I wonder why I never realized how ruthless mattress salesman where!

I'm starting to feel a bit better about Trump. He's totally flip-flopped and just about everything he ran on. It's only a matter of time before his own party turns on him for not keeping a single promise besides perhaps one or two that will be marginalized.

Safe travels to all and enjoy this day especially and try not to argue about politics.

NCC Clinches 17th Title

Congrats to North Central College for winning their 17th NCAA Men's Cross Country Championship title. We won two when I ran there and I'm immensely proud of my time in the program.

The Bears lost another game today dropping their record to 2-8. Maybe they are worse than I thought but someone is going to face the chopping block very soon.

We have a 12 pound turkey defrosting in the fridge. It's strictly for sandwiches come Friday.

We ate hogfish in Key West and it's a tasty big fish. Apparently everybody likes them because they've been over-fished and new catch limits will be coming shortly.

Burt Reynolds is in Key West this weekend for a lifetime achievement award. This man dominated the box office in the 1970's like very few ever have. Congrats Bandit!

A Trace Of Snow

Yep, we went from 64 degrees to 31 degrees in less than 8 hours. We woke up to a small trace of snow but we are still on pace for the warmest November ever.

Coco was over last night and looks almost completely recovered. We'll try soccer practice tomorrow and see how it goes.

I ordered pizza online for us last night. Boy it sure was difficult. I could have called it in and picked it up faster but I wanted it delivered.

Tonight is 5 Card Stud at County Clare with John and Angela. Could be a cold walk as we aren't used to this yet. In two months this will be like heaven. You have to love the Midwest. Ok, you really don't but we always tell ourselves that until we can move somewhere warmer!
