Close Out April

What a lousy weather month. March was definitely warmer and I haven't checked the stats but February was fairly comparable to April but it was February.

St. Marcus had a race at the Lutheran Seminary in Thiensville and all the kids did really well. Coco finished in 15th place out of a 100. He started a bit too slow but worked his way up for a nice finish.

Then we headed to Whitefish Bay for the Milwaukee Torrents soccer game which ended in a 0-0 tie with UW Green Bay. It didn't start raining until just as the game finished and it's been drizzling for a few hours now.

Tonight Krissy and I are meeting friends in Jackson and hanging out!

Stay safe.

Walt Disney

I was reading about Walt Disney today and never knew that he as nominated for 59 Academy Awards and won 22 of them. There's also a long lasting rumor that his body was frozen after his death but that isn't true. In fact, we just saw his grave at Forest Lawn in January and he's just a few feet away from Spencer Tracy.

Another cold and dreary day which is the forecast for tomorrow also. Coco has a race in the morning and a professional soccer game to watch in the afternoon before his dance tomorrow night!

The Benghazi Committee is now trying to trace down Facebook posts about the embassy attack which people in Iowa posted. Really? What a farce this has become.

The Cubs won again after trailing most of the game. What a team!
The NFL Draft continues and a lot of great coverage for the football fans.

Today we went shopping. I bought underwear, shorts and flip flops. Apparently wishful thinking isn't free!

Conch Republic Days

It's Conch Republic Days in Key West. Krissy and I have been to it twice and had a wonderful time. They are having the world's largest parade. It only travels a little over a mile but it is from coast to coast. That is the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. They meet at the Southernmost Point. I have a picture somewhere of myself straddling the two bodies of water.

It's another cold and rainy day in Milwaukee with a high of 43 degrees. Anytime now Mr. Sun, anytime now!

A big welcome to Latvia as they become the 42nd country to visit my blog. Thank you so much.

The first round of the NFL draft is complete and it resumes tomorrow. I fixed a big batch of garlic wings with a bit of red wine to watch it. The Bears selected leonard Floyd a fast looking linebacker from Georgia. I'm not sure on this one. But, that is the exact same thing I said the last time the Bears selected a linebacker in the first round. His name was Brian Urlacher and that turned out quite well so I'm hoping history repeats itself!

The Nomad

On this cold and windy day I managed to catch a little soccer with my buddy Derek at the Nomad. It's always been one of my favorite bars and it's filled for every big soccer game. We'll be back next Tuesday!

Ted Cruz made his V.P today despite the fact that he has no chance of winning. It's grandstanding at its finest. That man thinks of absolutely nobody but himself, so sad.

Bad weather in Chicago caused the Cubs game to be cancelled. To bad as Jake Arrieta was starting for the Cubs.

The NFL Draft in Chicago is tomorrow night. Krissy bought me wings and chips and dip. What a girl. I'll just be sitting in front of my couch watching it like the good ole days! I'm predicting that Myles Jack or Lawson from Clemson is their pick if they don't trade down.
Best wishes and proud thoughts to all my friends and classmates from Yorkville, Il. Our hometown can not be tarnished with recent events. If someone gives you a hard time just do what we always did. Knock them on their ass!

Chernobyl

It's a cold and windy day with May just around the corner. Warm weather can't get here soon enough as everybody is tired of the status quo.

The Cubs are playing the Brewers tonight at Wrigley Field. The fans look extremely cold as the wind is blowing in off Lake Michigan.

Apparently it looks like Prince might have died without a will according to reports. I see a court case coming up on this.

It's the 30th anniversary of Chernobyl the nuclear disaster in the Ukraine. It is still leaking radiation and they are basically working on a giant capsule to enclose the reactor permanently. The nearby towns are grown over but animals still live there as well as a few people who went back to their villages.

A lot of people still favor nuclear energy over solar for some reason. Build more nuclear plants seems to be the consensus as long as it's not in their town!

Tough Loss Hawks

I won't be able to sleep tonight after watching the Hawks lose to the Blues in the 7th game of the first round. They've won 3 Stanley Cups in the last 6 years but it's been tough for anyone in hockey to win back to back Cups as it hasn't been done since 1998.

I'm amazed yet again at how hard these hockey guys beat each other up but at the end of the series they line up in a perfect line and shake every single opposing player's hand and say something.

I guess it goes back to protocol and the fact that it's a tight knit community that plays against each other since childhood. Even the bad blood on the ice seems to completely vanish at the end of a series no matter the outcome.

Oh well, it was another great season. Things didn't seem quite right at the end of the regular season and that seemed to carry over into the playoffs. Still a younger team with a lot of talent.

They shall be back!

Soccer and Bel Air

It was almost too busy of a weekend for me and nothing much was accomplished. Coco had soccer all three days including his clinic on Saturday. We hit Bel Air for lunch after that and had great tacos.

Sunday night was his game which they lost. He played well but went down going for a ball and had his hand stepped on. He actually had a cleat indentation in the palm of his hand. It was the last game of the indoor season and it sure was a rough and tumble league as the refs let them play!

The Hawks won making it a big game 7 tomorrow night. You gotta believe!

The Cubs played brilliant again and have the league's best record.

The solar powered plane finally made it round trip around the world. It has wider wings than a Boeing 747 and 17,000 solar cells in the wings. Totally amazing and the technology will refine that in the future. And yet, some people will cling onto 13th technology like coal until their last dying breath!

Have a great week!

A Purple Rain Night

The Cubs continue their hot ways with another easy looking victory. It seems like ages ago that we watched them in spring training in Mesa. I still can't get over last night's no-hitter.

Tiger Woods might be back this year after all. He was swinging the club good at a golfing clinic. Last report I heard they made it sound like he couldn't bend over and tie his shoes.

Krissy is out of town and Purple Rain is playing everywhere on television. I haven't seen it in years so I'm making some popcorn and heading to the couch!

Jake Arrieta Officially A Legend

We're not even three weeks into the season and Jake Arrieta of the Chicago Cubs is 4-0 and threw his second no hitter in less than a year. The Cubs won 16-0 as they knocked the cover off the ball so it had to pain Joe Maddon to leave him in this game when it was already won. Jake is officially an icon, legend and the best pitcher currently in the game all at once!

The Hawks are in win or go home mode so I won't say much besides I believe they will win three in a row and take this series!

I passed 5 Jimmy Johns today and they all had lines out the door with about 200 people in line. Except the one by the UWM campus that had every bit of 400 people at least for one dollar subs!

Sad news also today as the legendary musical artist Prince passed away much too early. I remember when Purple Rain stayed number one on the charts for 24 weeks and everybody saw the movie. By all accounts he really respected his craft and worked very hard at all aspects of music playing up to 27 instruments on one album alone. He shall be missed as the music world and fans everywhere mourn with purple tears.

Remembering Milt Pappas

I once waited in line at a car dealership to meet Milt Pappas and Ernie Banks. Eight years later I would see him often as both of his kids, Steve and Michelle went to North Central College which is where I attended. Their mother tragically disappeared my sophomore year and was found five years later a victim of a tragic accident. Steve lived on my dorm floor and Michelle was in my class and someone I talked to for a bit most days. I just learned reading Milt's obituary that Michelle passed away last October. She was such a nice person.

Milt was a helluva pitcher winning 209 games and pitching a no-hitter that should have been a perfect game in my opinion.  I was watching it live on WGN and the count to Larry Stahl on the 27 batter was 3-2 and the umpire called the last pitch a ball ruining a perfect game. Milt only pitched 11 innings of minor league ball before coming up to the big leagues at the age of 18. He gave us Cub fans some great memories and he will be missed.

There's a new show debuting on the Smithsonian Channel called the Sports Detectives. They track down missing sports items like Ali's Olympic gold medal and the 1980 USA flag from the gold medal winning hockey team. It sounds extremely interesting!

Guitar Time

It was a pretty good day for my son. At track practice on a cold and windy day he ran a very good mile time. Followed by an excellent couple of guitar songs at his recital. He certainly looks the part of a musician. Carries his guitar case cool and looks like a natural performer. He's had a bit of Hollywood in him since the day he was born!

A good day so far for Chicago sports as the Cubs are up and the Hawks are tied. Keeping my fingers crossed as both still could go south.

The self proclaimed Tiger Whisperer apparently was mauled to death by a tiger. Sometimes self promotion can backfire I guess.

Speaking of self promoters Trump won the New York primary big time and will go on to be the nominee I believe. How come he couldn't take an interest in tigers? Kidding, save the nasty emails please!

The Dreaded Tax Deadline

I'll admit that I waited until the last minute to do my taxes. I meant to do them over the weekend but was too busy but I should have started them weeks ago. Luckily I had Krissy for some help. For about one hour there I would actually vote for Ted Cruz if I even remotely thought that I could do my taxes on a simple postcard. Show it to me Ted but I doubt you can do it. In fact, the only item on your Senate resume is obstruction and doing nothing.

To do my taxes I had to go through a drawer of passwords and logons to obtain some information or use my tax service. Someday I'll have to organize that mess. I know most of my basic ones by memory.

Coco has a guitar recital tomorrow. He gave us a preview tonight and he's doing well. Going to bed now. Doing taxes is tiring!

Good night and may you all get a refund!

AC/DC Has A New Singer

Axl Rose will be joining AC/DC as their new lead singer for their tour this year. He is also staying with the Guns N Roses tour so he will be one busy singer this year. Krissy won a free trip via a radio station to see AC/DC in Brazil when she was a teenager. She's also making her famous chicken as I write!

The Cubs were a shutout today which won't happen very often this year. The good news is the Hawks are up 2-1 over the Blues so I'm hoping they hang on.

Grocery shopping today and we need a new store. It's poorly managed. They have coupons for items which are higher than normal prices for some reason and today we had to leave the store and go back into the lot to find a shopping cart. They can't do anything right it seems on a continual basis and I'm easy going with this kind of stuff.

Coco has soccer tonight and anxious to see him stepping up his game with his new soccer clinic experience.

A great white shark was spotted in the Upper Keys which is rare. A boat captain jumped overboard and filmed the 12 footer just swimming around. Rumor has it that he won't bother any human attorneys. Professional courtesy!

Two Dinners Milwaukee Style

Someone asked me today why Krissy and I were going out today in the mid-afternoon. Easy, it's not snowing and we hit about 60 degrees.

In a rather uneventful day we started off with a shower beer at home then headed to the Roman Coin. They have brand new 50th anniversary t-shirts so I bought one. One bar in the same family for 50 years and you can bring your dog in anytime! It's truly an Eastside gem.

Then we headed to Points East and had fabulous wings and fries. Truly a great place to eat. Dukes on Water Street was our next stop. Hard to beat their happy hour specials and it was crowded with the Marquette Seniors Pub Crawl. A lot of nice young kids but the UWM crowd seems to handle their liquor quite a bit better.

After Dukes we headed to Vagabonds and had some excellent Mexican food. So, the walk home seemed ripe for a stop at the Y-Not which is always an interesting crowd. So, now we're tired and full and it's time to go home but we stopped at Hosed on Brady for a final nightcap because we can and it's only a mere 100 yards from our house.

An excellent Eastside of Milwaukee time in our great neighborhood!

Milwaukee Torrent

There's a new team in town called the Milwaukee Torrent who will be bringing professional outdoor soccer to the city. They are having a soccer clinic at St. Marcus and it started today and Coco had a blast. The owner/coach is a German man named Andreas Davi and he is quite impressive. I watched their session and he really knows coaching and had the kids attention every single second a truly remarkable feat alone. We'll be going to some games this year!

The Blackhawks evened their first round playoff series at 1-1 with a nice road win tonight. Playoff hockey is so fun to watch!

Krissy is at the Comedy Cafe tonight and I'm hanging home watching hockey and working on my book.

The weather looks warmer tomorrow and Krissy and I are going out for an afternoon of fun!

Stay safe out there!

Taste Of Key West

It's the Taste of Key West this week on the 18th. It's all happening on the Truman Waterfront Pier. It's truly a great restaurant city! From Blue Heaven to Pepe's and everything in between they feed you darn good!!

It's two weeks until the NFL Draft. More instant millionaires on the way! The Chicago Bears pick 11th.

My Cubs are winning 3-0 late in the game tonight. If they hold on this will be their best start since 1969.

I took the car in for an oil change and some filter changes. Yep, one of those boring days that we all have time to time.

I've been playing phone tag with AT&T all week regarding my email complaint to the CEO. I initially sent in to their customer care email saying it's so hard to contact a person to discuss issues with. The email came back suggesting I use an automated system which is why I sent it to the CEO. It seems like they have exactly one person to handle situations like this and he's very hard to get ahold of. I rest my case!

Kobe's Last Game

I've never been a huge Kobe fan simply because I've been the ultimate Michael Jordan fan since he was a freshman at North Carolina. Simply for me M.J was the best there ever was and the best there ever will be. I could go on and on about Jordan but I won't simply because it's Kobe's night and I respected the way he played the game. Ultra competitive and being the second best player ever isn't so bad in my book Kobe and you are a legend!

The Cubs are up big in the 6th inning so I will go to bed early as I'm tired instead of following the final pitch. These guys are a great team so far!

I'm starting to think Trump isn't nearly as smart as people have been lead to believe. In fact, I'm starting to think he's a fraud like Madoff. None of his policies are workable and today he addressed an audience in Pennsylvania and called for bringing back famed Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. My god man, do some research you dumb ass. Paterno has been dead since 2012!

The Junk Police

Lost in the North Carolina uproar of their recently signed law was two things. It denied people the right to file suit in court over discrimination. I thought this was what the court system was about. File suit and let a jury of your peers decide. Taking away rights seems to be the way local and state governments do things these days.

The second thing I didn't understand was why write an unenforceable law to start with? Quit finding solutions looking for a problem. Were they contemplating hiring a police force to go into bathrooms to do junk inspections? Because that's the only way this was going to work! Was there even a single complaint filed about this?

How about worrying about jobs and education. Where's the uproar on Wisconsin, Kentucky and Illinois drastically cutting education funding and increasing class size?

Anyway, the Cubs are off today and we hit a high of 40 degrees today. Not a lot of Tuesday joy and my knees are killing me from track practice every morning with the track team. But I'll still get up tomorrow and expect a great day!

Jim Harrison A Legendary Writer

I must have been short on sleep a couple weeks ago as I missed the passing of legendary writer Jim Harrison. He wrote Legends of the Fall which is a great novella and one of my top five favorite movies starring Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins. By all accounts he fashioned himself as a poet first and was part of the big 70's movement in Key West where he hung out with Mr. Jimmy Buffett, Tom Corcoran, Thomas McGuane and Hunter S. Thompson. Those 5 guys took the island by storm and never looked back to having great writing careers. He will be missed.

Apparently democracy has died for the Colorado GOP. Whether it was a truly a money shortage or some other reason the they only had a state GOP convention where a small minority of people voted for delegates not candidates. Not surprising that the Canadian Theodore Cruz won every single delegate. I'm no Trump fan as we all know but it sure lends some credence that it's a rigged process!

Speaking of Trump, 2 of his kids can't even vote for him in the New York Primary next week. It seems they missed the deadline to vote and they had almost a year I heard. That just tells me that none of them were Republicans to start with. Or, they are just as dumb as the Palin clan.

It's the Cubs home opener tonight. Baseball is back at the Friendly Confines of Wrigley Field!

A Labor Day Weekend Show

It's not quite official but several Parrot Head clubs who get advance notice of concerts for pre-sale purposes are confirming that Jimmy Buffett is playing Alpine Valley on September 3rd. That's good enough for me. I know it's not even close to Memorial Day yet but it's good to have holiday plans early!

Kiss is playing at the Bradley Center in Milwaukee on August 8th. That should be quite a sight seeing their fans downtown that night.

Coco's soccer team lost but played well tonight. He worked on taking the ball down the middle more and trying to create shots for everyone. He takes coaching very well unlike his old man!

The Cubs win again. Starting out at 5-1 for the first week is great. They look like a team who will be playing all the marbles in late October. I'm trying to not get ahead of myself but this team is just that good! Now if only the weather would get respectable!!

Have a great week and stay safe!

Krissy's Chicken

I had the world's best chicken today and Krissy made it. It was truly fabulous. She seared it in the cast iron pan and then baked it for a while with some kind of sauce. Out of this world!

Coco is battling a sore throat and ear again. It looks like he will be able to play soccer tomorrow night though.

A high of 31 degrees today. This is really getting old and some of the snow is still around.

A good time last night at the Roman Coin. Truly an old school joint. Our favorite seafood place, Bosley's on Brady is being sold and has new owners effective May 1st. The owner is retiring but it looks like the staff and everything will remain the same. No need to mess with perfection.

The Cubs won again pushing their record to 4-1. Let's keep on rolling like this for the next 6 months!

Schwarber Goes Down

Cubs left fielder Kyle Schwarber is out  for the season after tearing his ACL. We were at spring training last month and Coco got his autograph on what was his 23rd birthday. What a crying shame but this team is so deep that it's next man up.

It's been snowing in Milwaukee on and off all day with a winter storm warning. This is crazy. How can February and March be warmer than April.

I had to deal with AT&T the last two days and it's driving me nuts. I sent a long email to their customer care email address expressing my frustration that I they make it so hard to find a human being to deal with. My email was returned today saying that email address is no longer being viewed by people and that I should check their website to see if I can basically help myself to solve my problem via automation. I dug up the CEO email address and forwarded it to him and rested my case!

I finally tracked down the old school urinal from the Curve bar after it was torn down. It's a rather famous urinal that is well over a  hundred years old and has been written about in Milwaukee Magazine. It's about 4 feet high and 2 feet wide. It's been called the can't misser. Anyway, it's at the Lakefront Brewery. As you recall in an old blog I was trying to figure out a way that I could get it. It seems two people were allowed to go salvage it. It took a large hammer to break it loose from 5 inches of stucco flooring. When they lifted it up to cut the piping they found no piping. All these years it drained straight into the ground below and this was the reason that the building was sagging so bad in the middle.

Sorry for all the toilet talk today but AT&T has the effect on people!

National Beer Day

Prohibition was pretty much a disaster from the start. Woodrow Wilson vetoed the bill but Congress in their wisdom overrode the President. Thirteen years later Franklin Roosevelt lifted the ban on alcohol and it became legal again April 7th which is today thus the National Beer Day. There's a wonderful picture of a giant crowd on Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee as far as the eye can see celebrating it. All that silly law accomplished is make a bunch of gangsters and bootleggers filthy rich.

I'm sad to hear that former NBA player and coach Jerry Sloan has Parkinson's Disease and a form of dementia. He played for the Chicago Bulls and coached the Utah Jazz for an eternity. I'll always remember him for spending a summer afternoon with me and my friends playing hoops and talking basketball.

My high school coach knew Jerry so he came to a basketball clinic at a small shopping center in my hometown of Yorkville, Il. He was just coming off major knee surgery but he shot baskets with about a dozen of us for a couple hours and we sat at a table and talked basketball with him. He wasn't in any hurry and seemed to be having as much fun as us. He was a small town guy who never lost touch with his roots.

As a player he was a ferocious. One of the toughest defenders who ever played the game. He had his nose broken multiple times. Nobody else was tougher and that goes for the modern players as well. I've always said he was one of the few guys who would have been able to slow Michael Jordan down a bit. I know one thing about Jerry, he will fight this to the bitter end. Go Jerry!!!

Sir Paul McCartney

Wow, Paul McCartney is coming to Summerfest July 8th. He's played Milwaukee before but this is a great pickup for the Summerfest staff making this year's lineup one of the best in recent memory!

The Cubs continue their winning ways and move on to Arizona tomorrow night as they continue their undefeated season!

Shame on Wisconsin last night for electing a low life of a human being let alone a bigoted judge to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. It's the equivalent of electing a KKK member to the court and I won't mention this women's name.

A rainy track practice this morning but it didn't seem to bother the kids at all.

Country music lost a legend in Merle Haggard today. He actually passed away on his 79th birthday. He had about 40 number one hits and he was a member of the outlaw country genre. He called it as he saw it and he will be missed!

Wisconsin Election Day

It's been a pretty good turnout for the Wisconsin election so far. Krissy and I waited about a half hour. Hopefully college students will bring two forms of identification because their state issued college identification card by itself is not sufficient. Either the state itself thinks it's incompetent when issuing these identification cards or the Walker administration just wants to make it harder for college students to vote. These students will never forget this blatant discrimination in my opinion.

Krissy made it on the channel 6 news website from a tailgating photo. She's wearing a winter coat with the hood up looking very cold. The winning 50/50 raffle ticket took home over 40 grand yesterday and Krissy never checked her tickets on the way out. She did not win as I just checked.

Congrats to Villanova on winning the men's NCAA basketball championship.

I stayed up late watching the Cubs game last night and they won 9-0. They looked in mid-season form. It's going to be a wild ride. Both baseball season and the election results tonight!

Milwaukee Is A Buzzing

I've never seen Milwaukee quite like this except for maybe the Harley Celebration. Opening Day for the Brewers was today and I took Krissy to meet her friends down there just after 8am. People were partying like crazy already.

I would like to thank Milwaukee's finest traffic cop for threatening to give me a two hundred ticket while waiting out traffic by Miller Park. The guy behind me kept blasting his horn. I threatened to shove his horn you know where and he started yelling at the cops in front of me after calling me several choice names. Long story short he got a ticket for disorderly ticket. For some odd reason, he never waved back to me as we went our separate ways.

A few hours later, I'm sitting at an intersection when Bill Clinton and his entourage go by. The Wisconsin primary is tomorrow and I heard he was speaking at Turner Hall. A few hours alter I'm going by the Italian grocery a block from our house and Ted Cruz, our loser Governor and Carly Fiorina.

Then a few hours later I'm heading to Kelly's Bleachers to pick up Krissy and Sanders and Trump were speaking across the street from each other.

There was enough police and Secret Service presence to invade a small country. The Brewers lost. But most importantly, I can finally sit back in peace and watch my Cubs take on the Angels!

The Milwaukee Extremes

What a strange 24 hours. Yesterday we woke up to two inches of snow which has disappeared today thanks to hitting the 70 degree mark. The high for tomorrow is only 32 degrees. It's a roller coaster out there and tomorrow is opening day. Krissy is going. I'm a Cubs fan so I'm indifferent to the Brewers. The Cubs open up against the Angels in Anaheim I believe.

My sister Mary, Steve and niece Sarah stopped by on their way back to Illinois this afternoon dropping off Girl Scout cookies in the process.

Coco's team won their soccer game tonight by a 6-3 score. They played well.

Trump is in town for Tuesday's primary election. There is police everywhere throughout the city like I haven't seen in quite some time. He ate breakfast at Miss Katie's Diner. The family who owns it runs a restaurant just down the street from us and lives just around the corner from us. It's the same place that Clinton and Gorbachev ate lunch at back in the 90's.

Can't wait for baseball tomorrow. Play ball!

Keystock Music Festival

Huey Lewis and the News is the featured act at the KeyStock Music Festival today. He was the opener and the past Jimmy Buffett tour and I saw him last year and he's quite good!

Last night was a fun but low key night at the Roman Coin. It was pretty packed. We went home after midnight and it was dry outside. This morning we woke up to two inches of wet snow. Most of it has melted already but April snow is a bad joke around here even for those who like the snow.

I've been watching some Johnny Carson re-run shows on Antenna TV lately. Nobody even comes close to Carson.

I fell for a April Fools Day joke but it was March 31st so I thought it was real that Trader Joe's was closing all their stores. It's bad enough that I have Dry Paint signs on our front door from Krissy.

There's a petition that's been signed by over 50,000 people to have guns allowed inside the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this year. I've always thought it was strange that NRA and GOP sponsored events never allow anybody to bring guns to their events when they want them everywhere else. I think guns there might be a brilliant idea and that's no joke!

The Peeps Graveyard

All over the house I have open containers of Peeps ageing for the next week so they get nice and crispy. I've been doing that for years. Krissy actually put them neatly in a large bowl as apparently they looked like a Peeps graveyard she said.

Another rainy day. Sorry for no blog yesterday. It was one of those busy days and I never made it home until after 11pm.

I had to pay a health bill online. A time consuming endeavor made harder than it should be. I get especially ticked off when someone makes it hard for me to give them money. If you want to give me money I will always make it very easy I assure you.

The Blue Angels are flying in Key West this week. It's a great show to watch if you ever get a chance to watch them fly!

Another good jobs report released today for March. Wages even increased and naysayers have just shut their mouths for once.

Speaking of naysayers, Palin was in town today to speak on behalf of Trump. When she said he was the only one in the field with common sense the crowd actually laughed according to news reports. Maybe her 5 minutes is actually up and it's long overdue!
