Kentucky Derby Day

What a beautiful day. Naturally, it will be a grunt day for us. Grocery shopping and yard work. This year is phase 2. We did so much last year now it's just spicing it up and repairing some bare patches.

Congrats to the Chicago Blackhawks who routed Minnesota in their first series game last night. The refs blew an early whistle or they would have had one more goal.

Ben Affleck was banned from playing blackjack at the Hard Rock Casino in Las Vegas. Not for cheating or rowdiness. He was playing extremely well and winning a lot of cash so the pit boss suggested he try another game. Casinos are actually considered private clubs and can make crap up on the fly. It's perfectly legal.

There's some kind of foot parade going on as I write. I'm not sure what it's for or even if it's sanctioned. I once saw a spur of the moment parade complete with cars and signs after Italy won the World Cup soccer match one year and the cops just followed along peacefully. This one sure is loud and they seem to be having lots of fun.

Efrem Zimbalist Jr. passed away yesterday at the age of 95. He starred in The FBI television series which was one of my grandma's favorite shows. She never missed it and it was based on true crimes. Zimbalist was a true legend and by all accounts a great human being.

It's Kentucky Derby day. The sport of Kings. But today an $8000 horse called California Chrome rose to the occasion and beat the bluebloods. Commanding Curve closed big to capture second place and will be my early pick for the Belmont Stakes which is a quarter mile longer.

Over 164,000 people attended the Derby today. Mint Juleps and women wearing sassy bonnets have been long standing traditions. Other countries try to duplicate Churchill Downs but Kentucky will always be thoroughbred racing's legendary place.
